1. You must run but not really enjoy it
2. You must make decisions about your running (training plans, which races to sign up for, what gear to buy etc.) under the influence of several bottles of wine, beer, or mixed drink of choice
3. You must support the other whiners (er, runners) by taking their mind off of the running with discussions related to drinking, food (preferably cheese), and shoppingJillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03052202413507819724noreply@blogger.comBlogger116125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5647554354463931715.post-22113911710828420692015-11-10T14:44:00.000-05:002015-11-10T14:44:54.275-05:00Jill: One, Two, Skip a few (or a bunch)There I go again, getting all busy and forgetting to blog. Sometimes life just creeps up on you that way.
What I do love about running is the community. Before I started doing any kind of running, I was on the sidelines cheering for my husband who is a real runner. I loved the enthusiasm and support of the running community even then and was often teary eyed at the finish line as I got to witness many, many people cross for many, many different reasons. So when I saw this posted over at Running is Funny, I may have cried a bit (or a lot). This is what makes running so much fun. Could you imagine this happening to everyone during a race? That would be epic.

I'm not sure I can explain how sad/pissed I am. After another week of bronchitis misery, I surrendered, took the day off work, and went to the doctor last Thursday. I then started the slow process of getting better with the help of my new prescriptions. So while I was finally making progress on that front, I awakened an old back injury yesterday and can't find any comfort in sitting, standing, walking, or laying in bed. My running prospects are virtually nonexistent at this point which really sucks because I actually have time set aside twice a week for running during my Girls on the Run practices.

So while I'm not usually a fan of angry music because I generally don't enjoy when my music yells at me, angry is how I am feeling today. These are two "angry" songs that still end up on my running playlist from time to time.

Down with the Sickness by Disturbed

And just because it's October which means all things Halloween, here is a softer version of that song from the 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead (I have a soft spot for all things zombie):

Down with the Sickness by Richard Cheese

Seriously. Check that guy out. I mean, his last name is Cheese for goodness sake!

One Step Closer by Linkin Park (probably my favorite angry band)

Our girls weekend away was super successful. There was a ton of food and wine, zip lining in the rain (thanks to Chase, Andrew, and Bayer from the Zipline Tour for a great time despite the rain), and good times spent in the hot tub at our cabin in Red River Gorge. I lost and then subsequently rescued my debit card after dropping it from the Skylift near Natural Bridge. I ate so much food this weekend, from Mexican to the Red River Rockhouse (super awesome place--highly recommend) to Smashburger, that I feel (and probably look) like this:

I would normally say that I will feel better after a run or other workout this week, but my husband and I have been busy breeding superbacteria in our lungs. The result is that I have had an ongoing case of bronchitis that makes my lungs sound like I have been smoking like these two all of my life:

So while I can't run to these songs at the moment, I am eagerly looking forward to when I can breathe and run again. There's no particular reason why I picked these two songs other than the fact that they are currently collecting dust on my playlist.

While this trip doesn't include running, husbands or children, it will definitely include wine, zip lining, a cabin, a hot tub, and wine. It is also supposed to include rain which brings back bad, bad memories for us. Despite the rain, I am pretty sure I am sitting at my desk looking like this:

I'm probably freaking out the students too. Did I mention I work in an all-boys school now?

Anyway, before I depart, I wanted to leave you with this week's really important news. Enjoy!

Should we worry about arsenic levels in our red wine? Probably not.

If you are into gadgets for your wine drinking, then this article is for you. We don't really care around here. We just want the bottle opened.

If you live in or near Wausau, Wisconsin, a new cheese shop is opening.

Maybe you live near Twin Falls, Idaho? You are getting a new cheese shop too!

In Italy, there are cheese thieves. For real.

Finally! Validation that my favorite cheese, goat cheese, is healthy.

October means Oktoberfest which means Beer Cheese!

Don't fork out too much money for your running shoes.

However, last week I was able to sneak in an evening trip to the store alone while the husband handled bedtime. I never thought I would look forward to grocery shopping, but these unexpected moments of solace and quiet are really quite exciting nowadays. One of the benefits is being alone in my car which allows me to put this song on full blast:

S.O.B by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats

(an amazing running song)

Another benefit is that I am able to hear the music and advertisements that are playing in the background at the store. Normally, I would probably tune those out as well, but as I was standing in an aisle contemplating how long I could possibly stretch out this trip, a few distinct words caught my ear. Specifically, "Dave Matthews" and "wine." And as I started to really pay attention, I learned something amazing. Dave Matthews, one of my all time favorites, had partnered with a winery to create his own wine brand. The brand is named after one of my all time favorite Dave songs, The Dreaming Tree, and the store I was currently standing in was now carrying it. I took it as a sign. I was meant to be alone that night so that I could become aware of this wine's existence and purchase a bottle (or four).

It's so pretty that I haven't had the heart to open it yet. I'm sure that won't last long. Our new dog needed to be acknowledged also. Her name is Taylor, after Taylor Swift, which is fitting for Music Mondays.

Here's where you can find out more about this endeavor: Dreaming Tree Wines

Even though it's not a great song for running, I have to post the song as well because I love it.

And finally because Music Mondays are supposed to be about good running songs, here's a few more of my very favorite Dave Matthews Band songs that are less sad and much more upbeat:

Two Step

Stay

We are getting all dressed up and heading out to the Blue Door Bash, a fundraiser for our local boys and girls clubs. The best part? Our kids are sleeping over somewhere else for the night. We aren't sure if we are more excited to get dressed up and do adult things together or if we are more excited at the prospect of sleeping in naked.

Anyone who is remotely familiar with this blog knows that we don't particularly enjoy running. After all, it is the first rule of membership to our very exclusive club. One of the reasons we let this blog go dormant for so long is because we actually quit running for awhile. In a short, somewhat cryptic post, Habanero Cheddar mentioned our upcoming first half-marathon. And then there was silence. Lots of silence. For a very long time. One of the things I didn't mention in my post about what we have been up to was The Worst Race, but one of the reasons we stopped running and blogging for awhile was due to that particular experience.

It started out as another great idea cultivated under the influence of some tasty beverages. Smoked Gouda was the mastermind of this particular adventure, and she sold it well. It basically went down like this:

Hey! We should take a girls road trip to Nashville and do the half marathon race. It's part of the Rock 'n' Roll marathon series so there will be lots of bands playing on the course which will make it fun instead of horrible. Think of it as just jogging from band to band. I know someone who can hook us up with a place to stay that includes a pool and hot tub. It will be so much fun.

The rest of us agreed pretty quickly, poured another round of drinks and probably looked like this:

Then we trained. We weren't out to break any records or accomplish goals. Remember, we were there for the music, fun, food (shout out to Jack's Bar-B-Que), and the overall experience. All of us were in good enough shape to finish even if we did a lot of walking.

We had a good time at the expo purchasing alcohol themed headbands and tech shirts with double meanings:

I also purchased a hat since the forecast was calling for rain on race day, but I had yet to realize just how much that rain would affect us.

Race day dawned early as most large marathons do which is hard for those of us who despise mornings in general, but we soldiered on. We got to the start and dutifully put ourselves in one of the last few corrals since, you know, we are slow. By then is was already raining. None of us are such lightweights that we were phased by a little rain, but that rain quickly turned into hard, driving, cold rain. Kind of like this:

Ok, so we are generally positive people and probably would have been able to laugh it off immediately if things hadn't taken a turn for the worst. First, the weather got worse. By mile 8 or 10 the cold wind was picking up and there was thunder. The rain never really let up the entire time, and did I mention it was a cold rain? Basically, we felt like we were in this:

It wasn't a complete loss yet because there was music! Right? I mean, it is a Rock 'n' Roll marathon so there still has to be music. There has to be a rain plan. But there wasn't. Well, at least it wasn't a very good rain plan. All of the big/recognizable bands weren't playing at all. In one or two cases, a portable radio/CD player was sent up under their tent. In most cases, the tents were completely empty. A few smaller acts toughed out the rain with us, but they seemed to have conspired ahead of time to make the experience even worse for us. The first two bands that I passed were playing songs about....water. Of all things....water. I was cold, drenched and generally miserable, and theses folks who were dry under their music tents thought that singing Waterfalls or Sea Cruise would be a great idea. We didn't take any pictures, but I'm pretty sure I looked like this:

And that's pretty much how we all felt about running for awhile afterwards. We all finished and enjoyed the hot tub that night after a yummy dinner, but when it came to picking our next race or just going out for a jog, we all stayed eerily silent for a long time. Other than our Girls on the Run practices, we just didn't run. It was like the runner's version of PTSD. I'm sure all serious runners have had experiences like that, but as casual runners, we didn't have the mental toughness to jump back on the horse quickly.

We have done other races since: a zombie 5k, a couple Girls on the Run 5ks, and I braved the half marathon again last year with the Queen Bee. But as a group, we have had a difficult time getting back together to run regularly, especially with all of the life changes on top of our collective mental block. However, I am quietly on a mission to return us to our former glory. Wish me luck!

Even though we are mostly known for our love of wine, we definitely have a soft spot for margaritas. Founding member, Smoked Gouda is known for making a mean margarita. Once when we were out celebrating her birthday, we ended up with a super-sized margarita that was almost as big as a whole pitcher. I'm fairly certain I still have a picture of it somewhere. I may have to dig around on my older computer and find it. Follow up post to come....

So in honor of the margarita theme, I present two tunes from the Mayor of Margaritaville himself, Jimmy Buffet.

Margaritaville (a little too slow for my running playlist, but it deserves recognition)

We've had a busy week around here. I'm still trying to shake a cold and have started Girls on the Run practices (yay!), Stephanie has spent the week preparing to move into a new house, and Smoked Gouda is celebrating a birthday for one of her 28 (approximately) little ones. My weekend looks like two days crammed full of swim lessons, helping a friend move (see above), a local Oktoberfest, not catching up on housework, and probably not napping. I do, however, have two small blocks of cheese and a bottle of Moscato to help me survive. Cheers.
That's why we started. It gets us out of our houses, away from our little people that we have spawned and our husbands, and gives us time to remember who we are as people outside of our roles as teachers, moms, and wives. That's a good thing.

I'm recovering from a cold and a busy weekend filled with birthday fun for my youngest daughter. Somehow my Girls on the Run coaching gig starts tomorrow, and I'm not even close to 5k running shape. My goal today is not to gorge on candy at work and cheese at home.

I had a song all picked out for today, but then one of my students was jammin' to another song I love to run to. I couldn't decide which one to post, so I am posting both. Happy Monday!
So today I present the first installment of News You Can Use, a regular news roundup of what we consider critical pieces of newsworthy information. You're welcome.

To be honest, most of us around here, with the exception of Stephanie, don't really pay much attention to "pairing" our wines and cheeses. We know that wine is delicious and so is cheese. That's good enough for us. However, for you more enlightened wine & cheese folks out there, here are some Tips for Pairing Wine & Cheese.

As teachers, we know first-hand the struggle of drinking on a budget. For you red wine lovers out there, this article on Decent Bottles for $10 or Less should be helpful.

I am teacher, and generally speaking, teachers don't do excuses. We hear it all: all the reasons why something wasn't done or turned in or wasn't done well. We nod and listen to the excuse, and then explain why it still isn't acceptable. There is always a way.

I want to make clear that the rest of this post isn't an excuse about why we haven't been blogging regularly. Instead, it is simply an explanation of what we have been up to in the long space between entries.

Changes by the numbers:

For the 4 original Whine & Cheese members:

3 babies (2 girls and 1 boy)

1 wedding

3 moves into new houses

4 (yes, all 4 of us) new jobs

671 bottles of wine and 364 pounds of cheese has been consumed (approximately)

Awesome things we missed blogging about during that time:

Having new babies

Getting married

Moving into new houses

Changing jobs

Drinking 671 bottles of wine and eating 364 pounds of cheese

2 new members joining our club

Running our first (and possibly last) half marathon. (I have actually done 2. Who am I?)

1 new member did her first full marathon (she's crazy but we love her)

Coaching 3 seasons of Girls on the Run (us as role models? crazy, right??). I am gearing up for my 4th season right now.

Running 1 zombie themed 5k

1 discussion about doing a mini triathlon (we were seriously drunk after the zombie 5k)

So while it seems we have disappeared from the running world, we are still here. We have simply been struggling to find the time to sit and write. Somehow, after 2 years in my new job, I am finding more time for myself again. While that is probably not a true statement for all of us (new babies, I'm looking at you!), I am hoping to get back into the swing of blogging about our running and eating and drinking adventures. There is definitely no shortage of things to write about.Jillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03052202413507819724noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5647554354463931715.post-80062047470175172272015-06-12T21:21:00.001-04:002015-06-12T21:21:32.046-04:00Jill: Does it still count as blogging if it's been two years?

I miss blogging. I really do. Perhaps, just maybe, this might be the summer that I can reclaim this particular hobby.
We are still all running (well kinda) and having a good time (ummmm). Stay tuned for posts about leading a girls group at school and preparing them for their first 5k and us running our FIRST HALF-MARATHON! Until then I'm going to stretch my hips and call it a night.Habanero Cheddarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16934078886668225399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5647554354463931715.post-74916527588535806472012-12-12T14:06:00.001-05:002015-06-12T21:05:48.597-04:00Still goingThis will be a short post because I only have 9 more minutes of my plan bell left but thought I would get in a quick post. I'm happy to report I am still keeping up with my running (again). Yesterday, Steph and I met up to run through the halls and school gym at work. After doing that run I had a lot of steam to blow off so I headed to the gym and did another 2 miles on the treadmill. I would like to get to the point of running outside again soon, wish me luck! Habanero Cheddarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16934078886668225399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5647554354463931715.post-16284775146495557952012-11-29T10:08:00.000-05:002015-06-12T21:05:08.407-04:00Getting back on track (literally)*Cricket* *Cricket* Yes, I'm still alive, believe it or not. I have been gone from the running/whining/cheese world for some time, but I think I finally found my motivation to get back in the game.

Not sure when I last wrote on this blog but back in April I got engaged (don't worry he LOVES cheese as well, wouldn't work out if he didn't). You would think that would be motivation enough to start working out and getting ready for my big day but for some reason the motivation was not there.

Recently a competition at work started with a Biggest Loser concept. Just a friendly game to help motivate each other to keep off the pounds. This definitely sparked a fuse. Then the bomb in my face went off as I stepped on the scale. While I'm no where near my original weight, I've gained back some of the pounds I worked SO HARD to get off.

I'm ready to get back on track to get healthier but over all just to feel better about myself. After exercising last night and some this morning, I almost forgot how helpful it is mentally. Hopefully this in the beginning (again) to get where I need to be. Habanero Cheddarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16934078886668225399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5647554354463931715.post-78650110501345220162012-10-05T15:34:00.000-04:002015-06-12T21:03:11.911-04:00Steph: Little RunnersSo ... Jill and I decided that the Color Run was so much fun that we wanted to run it again when it came to Cincinnati.

And ... why not run it with her WAY adorable children? They will love it, right?

So ... We signed up.

Then ... We decided it might be a good idea to practice.

So ... We met at a park.

Then ... our husbands decided to run with the stroller and little Miss Josie.

While ... Jill and I decided to jog/walk/jog/skip/walk with toddler Sidney.

Then .... we laughed A LOT because Saturday will be interesting.

While they have a lot of great running songs, this is my favorite. It's the remixed version of 19-2000. Other than a fun, upbeat sound, it's got a great line about music: It's the music that we choose. Isn't that the truth?

This really should be filed as a Catch Up post since it has been seven months since Jill over at JoggingJeans sent me an email introducing me to my new online besties. I filed the email away and vowed to go through the files over the summer. It took me forever to get to this one which is sad because it is full of awesomeness. Jill sent me a link to my new online best running friends, the Relucant Runners.

Tripp and Tyler are the hilarious brains behind the site. When I had time to poke around, I started with their introduction video which totally made me smile with delight at knowing I had found an entire community of runners just like us here at Whine & Cheese. It's like seeing your soul mate across a crowded room. I too like to run, but just not while I'm doing it. I too am concerned about the length of my shorts when I run. Do yourself a favor and check them out. Highlights include the Advice section, which is way more instructive than any issue of Runner's World that is currently in the magazine rack in my bathroom right now, and the Playlist page. I'm a big music lover and have started Music Mondays around here, so I can totally appreciate another source of good running music. I promise you will love these guys (as long as you're not a really serious runner).Jillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03052202413507819724noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5647554354463931715.post-17556111885214321072012-09-10T16:46:00.005-04:002012-09-14T22:25:56.957-04:00Jill: Music MondayThe post is a bit late in the day, but for today's music selection, we are heading into techno territory. I picked this song as my first techno entry for 3 reasons:

It's techno and techno is pretty much made for running. And dancing. The only downside is that it could possibly make you run too fast. That is certainly a problem we don't have around here.

The song is called Don't Give Up. So not only does it have a great beat, but it's also super motivational.

The techno-ized voice singing the few lyrics that appear are by Bryan Adams. Seriously. Bryan Adams, who has turned out to be one of those rockers that gets better looking with age.

I feel bad mentioning that the song is actually performed (and Bryan Adams' voice was techno-ized) by Chicane, a British music act which I know nothing else about. Sorry Chicane, but love this song.Jillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03052202413507819724noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5647554354463931715.post-33304079455708449652012-09-03T07:00:00.000-04:002012-09-14T22:25:56.965-04:00Jill: Music MondayTo make up for missing last Monday, I hereby present 2 very different songs that I enjoy running to.

First, can I just say that I love me some Killers? Seriously. Love them. Brandon Flowers' voice is awesome. When their first major hit, Somebody Told Me, came out I was hooked and loved that jam, especially the '80s-ish sound it has. I still do. It's still one of my favorites to run with cause it just makes me MOVE. And let's face it, that's exactly what I need now that school is back in session.

Speaking of the '80s, I am a child of the late '80s and '90s which means I also love me some Beastie Boys and was super sad about losing Adam Yauch (and really the Beastie Boys as we know them) earlier this year. While I love all things Beastie, one of my favorite songs to load up for a run is Intergalactic, a late '90s Grammy winner. Seriously, the Beastie Boys are that good (don't even get me started on how awesome their videos are). Not only is it a great running song, it brings back some great college day memories! Best line of the entire song: "I'll still fry you in my wok." That's great stuff, folks.

As a genre, those songs are usually too sad/angry/resentful/slow/dreary/hateful to be of any use. However, every once in awhile someone, somewhere writes an upbeat break-up song. This one by Carolina Liar is one of my favorites to run to. I know it's not the happiest of songs, but the upbeat music always gets me going.
